The End of Her by Shari Lapena

SYNOPSIS:

It starts with a shocking accusation…

Stephanie and Patrick are recently married, with new-born twins. While Stephanie struggles with the disorienting effects of sleep deprivation, there’s one thing she knows for certain – she has everything she ever wanted.

Then a woman from his past arrives and makes a horrifying allegation about his first wife. He always claimed her death was an accident – but she says it was murder.

He insists he’s innocent, that this is nothing but a blackmail attempt. But is Patrick telling the truth? Or has Stephanie made a terrible mistake?

How will it end?

MY THOUGHTS:

Having read Shari Lapena's debut novel The Couple Next Door a few years ago I jumped at the chance to join The End Of Her blog tour. What I love about Lapena's writing is that it hooks you straight away and draws you in. There is something comforting about the domestic drama that starts to unfold as you turn the pages but before you know it you are caught up in a chilling thriller where the pace doesn't let up.

The characters were well developed and I was completely at a loss as to who to believe. Every character had their own set of secrets which made the lies and the truth become very blurred at times. This made it every bit the twisted psychological thriller which I adored. I had no idea where the plot was going, who the reliable characters were or how it was going to end but oh my, just like her previous books, what an ending! It left me breathless with a huge smile on my face.

What I particularly loved (apart from the ending which I have already mentioned was epic), was the way an accusation can make you doubt everything. When Erica first arrives and accuses Patrick of murdering his first wife it starts to set the ball in motion for Stephaine, you watch her slowly process the information and become more and more disconcerted by this accusation. It has a profound effect on her and one she couldn't seem to overlook. It did make me question how I would react in that situation and I guess the question is do we truly know the people we live with? Can a seed of doubt make you lose total confidence, trust and belief in a person? This is why I loved this disturbing thriller, it left me with so many questions to ponder upon and would be perfect for a book club discussion.

Many thanks to Thomas Hill at Transworld Books for inviting me to join The End of Her book tour.
